Castello di Avia

Castello di Avia

Castello di Avia is a medieval castle near Avia in northern Juliana. The castle was built the 13th century, but modified until the 17th century to keep up with time. The castle is famous because it was the home of Peter Premis and all of the Dukes of Avia until 1505.

The castle has four square towers and a big square tower. It is near the Italian-Julianan border, north of Avia and was important for the defense of Juliana in the medieval period, because it was the biggest castle. During the communist period, the castle was a prison. Now, it is a tourist attraction since 1960 and has not been part of the Julianan defense since then.
